About the USSR† rollup
USSR (1972–1991), Unified Team (1992), Russia (1994–2022), and ROC (2021) consolidate into one bucket. We think of this as “the Soviet school” — the athletes trained inside that institutional lineage, regardless of which flag flew at a given Games.
Germany rolls up GDR + FRG post-1990 reunification. Czechoslovakia (1972–1992) stays as Czechoslovakia; we don't attribute its medals to Czech Republic or Slovakia after the split.
Every rolled-up row carries the † tag on its NOC label. Per-federation breakdown without rollup is a follow-on view.
